As usual, during the month of September the ownCloud conference was held. This year took place the 7th edition, with venue in the TH Gregor Simon Ohm of Nürnberg. And, of course, Solid GEAR was there. David Toledo, David González, Abel García, Juan Pablo Villafáñez and Jesús Recio spent three and half intense days with our ownCloud colleagues, customers, and other community people.
Day 1
The opening day, apart of greeting and meeting the new partners onboarded since our last trip, the talks were the main protagonists. The conference was opened by Tobias Gerlinger and Holger Dyroff (heads of ownCloud), to talk us about a global view of the year and what is awaiting for us in the near future.
From there, different talks oriented to the roadmaps of the squads and products. Mobile team was protagonist: David González gave a talk about the new Android architecture and how is it applied to the context of ownCloud. Brilliant!
Both iOS, the desktop client, the new web client (Phoenix) and the company’s global roadmap took place during this first day of the conference.
Day 2
The second day, different customers and partners related to Open Source development such as Kopano, Collabora or Only Office were present at the talks. Among them there was also an interesting talk related to the new storage architecture of ownCloud called Infinite Scale, or oCIS abbreviated. In my opinion, it was the most interesting talk of the day.
Day 3
The third day was the hot day for the Solid GEAR team at the ownCloud conference. During the day, there were several technical and agility talks that were quite interesting. In the mobile world, Matthias Hühne performed a demo about the new features in the iOS app integrated into iOS13 (shortcuts, document scanner…). Michael Neuwert told us how to build a MacOS app from an iOS app by using Catalyst.
In our team, Abel García explained the advantages of integrating the Android Document Provider onto an application like ownCloud, which allows users to easily exchange and interact with their files among all the providers that are installed in their devices.
After that, Jesús Recio told about how the methodology in the development of ownCloud mobile applications has evolved from its inception to the present day, reaching the current method. The Android team served as an example to explain the details.
Close to the end of the conference, for the second consecutive year, David Toledo led a nice initiative in which, atendees play to determine who is the one who knows the most about ownCloud, thanks a Quiz about ownCloud from the Kahoot! platform. Our partner Pasquale got the victory with a great advantage over the others. Great level!!
Again… party!
As regular basis at ownCloud conferences, after the third day the party is celebrated with all members and close friends of ownCloud. Once again, the Harlem bar near the center of Nuremberg welcomed us. There, we enjoyed and had fun for a while beyond the work.
Day 4
The fourth and last day of the conference was spent in hacking. During the morning we shared the last talks, discussions and peer working with the rest of the team before starting the trip to go home at the afternoon. We say goodbye once again to Nürnberg looking to the future with new challenges to face.
Thanks to ownCloud for the organization and all its members for their welcome! See you next year!!
