Test Cases Management Tools

On previous posts, we have been always talking about tools to automate test cases, automate APIs using Postman or even using Newman. You all know that these are very useful tools tied to QA processes but now we are going to focus effort on the TestCases Management Tools.

Test Automation

As you know, integrate the QA process in all our software developments is a key point for Solid Gear Group so that we can guarantee QA standards and customer satisfaction as much as possible. However, we have never talked about one of the most important processes on QA, test cases management.

In Solid Gear Group, we are proud of following TFD (Test First Development) practice without reaching the point of writing unit tests, something considered as a developer work. To carry TFD out in an appropriate way, it is important to base the work in test cases management tools that help in the tricky and important task of designing tests cases, critical task when developing a new feature.

Test First Development

Finally, we can stop using those so helpful Excel spreadsheets used in the past –and unfortunately, nowadays it continues being something common- to get modernized and use these tools.

There are a huge variety of tools that help us in managing test cases in an efficient way. We can talk whether we want to choose a free tool where after researching most of them, we finally chose TestLink or use a payment tool where we finally chose HipTest.

Basic features

Most of these tools use to have basic features that any QA engineer would expect to see in a test cases management tool:

  • Creation, management and test cases execution
  • Creation, management and test plan execution
  • Execution results management

On the other hand, some of them also provides features like:

  • Full integration with other tracking systems
  • Permissions management for different roles
  • Iterative executions on the same test plan
  • Integration with automated tests

I am not going to describe what HipTest exactly does, as we all know what is the purpose of these tools, but I am going to focus on explaining some interesting features that highlights over other tools.

HipTest

1ª Online application

Are you tired of installing applications in your laptops or to create an instance in your company servers to be able to use this tool?

This is a web application so that any test case design will be stored in the “cloud”. If you are people concerned about security and privacy, this may not be your tool.

2ª Action Words

The main question is: what does Action Words mean?. An Action Word is a sequence of repetitive steps that can be reused in different scenarios again and again.

This tool is extremely useful. How many times have you had to exactly write the same steps in different test cases? With Action Words, you can create a sequence of common steps that can be used in any test cases, allowing us to save time in terms of test cases design and to manage test plans in a better way.

3ª Optimization

Optimization is an advanced feature of the Action Words. Once you have finished a test plan, HipTest provides you the option of optimizing workflows and gives you some recommendations to include some steps in the Action Words. Of course, these are recommendations done by HipTest, although the final decision to include these or not are yours.

Of course, the choice of a tool directly depends on your current necessities but if you want to save time by using Action Words, you may choose HipTest as your test cases management tool for a reasonable price.
